Project Description
Located within the Alfred Drowne historic district, this addition consists of a mudroom and half bath attached to the existing kitchen. The home was constructed in 1894, and the addition was constructed in 2024. The house was designed for a clerk by the name of George Howard Smith. The Architect, May Mason, designed the project to be a 2 ½ story Colonial Revival dwelling with a hip-roof and clapboard sheathing. It holds a series of gabled dormers and a wrap-around porch with slender pair columns for both structural support and visual detail relating to the Colonial Revival style.

Existing Back Entry

New Back Entry

This project elevated the back entrance of the home’s facade by incorporating a covered porch and matching components to the existing home. Details including Tuscan columns, siding, trim, and roof, tie the new addition to the existing house.
Access to the basement from the bulkhead has been modified to align with the new facade.
Reconfigured Bulkhead

New Addition
"Matching the existing with proposed, both interior and exterior. Adding on to the functionally of the house while respecting the Colonial Revival style intended by the original Architect."

Proposed Floor Plan
The interior of the project incorporates the wants and needs of the owner. The bench and storage along the west wall benefit the functionality of the space. A coat closet in the mudroom provides easy access to storage upon entry. The fixtures and design of the bath were set to complement the mudroom while also providing a second bathroom on the first floor. The pocket door for the powder room allows for more accessible space in the mudroom to avoid back-to-back doors with the adjacent closet. The mirrored windows on the east and west walls provide opportunities for natural ventilation and natural light from both directions. Allowing the space to feel more comfortable with openness and natural light.
The seamless transition from old to new appears as one to give it the vision as if it has always been a part of the home. The view from the driveway encompasses the picturesque white home.
