Project Description
The Pacific-Visions team was hired to design a new first floor addition including a new master bedroom and master bedroom for a 1970 Ranch style home in Bristol, Rhode Island. The existing single-story ranch contained two standard size bedrooms and one full bathroom. Our clients were interested in creating a rear addition that would consume one of the existing bedrooms while adding new square footage for the proposed master bedroom and master bathroom.
The existing rear facade
The new master bedroom was designed to follow and unite the exterior boundaries of the existing ranch.
This master bedroom includes space for a new king size bed, a study area, access to the existing mechanical room, and access to the new master bathroom.
In the proposed master bathroom, our clients selected a new 38” x 38” Delta corner shower, a new double vanity sink, and a new toilet. The master bathroom also has its own new linen closet which can be accessed by a pocket door.

Exterior Concept Rendering - Proposed Rear Addition
One of the biggest challenges with this proposed addition was the design of the roof. The existing gable roof of the house created a condition where drainage would become a serious problem had we chosen to go with a gable, hip, or shed roof. Instead, we went with a flat roof pitching towards the backyard so that water could properly drain without causing ice dams in the winter. The clients also desired adding new solar panels on the flat roof to take advantage of overhead light exposure.
The final design for this addition provides the amenities our clients were looking for while adhering to and complimenting the conditions created by the existing home as well.
