Located in Jamestown, Rhode Island, this small cottage was completely renovated into a contemporary home. The existing cottage was quaint but also in very rough shape inside and out. The building's exterior and interior was stripped down to the structure and the shell of the building was added onto and renovated. The goal of the project was to keep the same quaint feeling of the small home while updating the home's look and feel. The passive house design principles were a main focus while designing the thermal envelope of the home to ensure it was an sustainable as possible. This project was featured on both HGTV and in Dwell Magazine.

Existing Cottage Exterior

Renovated Cottage Exterior

The exterior look of the home was transformed from a saltbox styled cottage into a much more simple gable form that looks more cohesive in design. The contemporary vertical board siding compliments the wooded landscape and seagrass plantings.
Every part of the design from the exterior trim, the window design and lighting expresses a contemporary interpretation of a modest cottage.
The rear of the property features views towards the ocean while still being hidden within the landscape.
